Green Smoothie Challenge

Started a green smoothie challenge yesterday. I plan to drink one a day for 21 days. By then it will hopefully become a habit. I have noticed a substantial decline in my health over the past two years, it is going to take some major lifestyle changes to reverse it. I know this isn’t Bible truth, but it rings so true to me in my life right now…

If you have health, you have hope. And if you have hope, you have everything.

It doesn’t mean that health = everything, but I suppose I love that statement because one of my favorite things my mother used to say was, “There’s always hope.”

We take good health for granted everyday. Just getting out of the bed in the morning is something many people cannot do. And by the grace of God, I still can. If you got out of the bed this morning, it was by the grace of God!

My father spoke of being on the “slippery slope” as he got to his upper 80′s. He was always such a vibrant man… so he knew what was happening to him. I am only 50, but I’ve noticed big changes. My weight, my energy level, arthritis pain & stiffness, and other concerns. The Bible has much to say about health, and I do wish the church would teach on it. I’ve always wondered why they don’t.

Back to green smoothies!

Today’s green smoothie was made with the following ingredients in my high speed blender: (I recommend Blendtec, Vitamix or Omniblend if the other two are out of your budget.)

2 cups water
1/2 small head romaine lettuce
Big handful baby spinach
2 t. chia seeds
1/2 avocado
1 apple, cut in large chunks (seeds and all)
Handful of cranberries (freshly frozen last Christmas season)
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen blueberries
2 cups sliced frozen strawberries

Amounts are approximate.

I’ve never made a smoothie with avocado, so I was a little nervous about adding it, but it was delicious and added extra smoothness and healthy fat. It makes the smoothie more of a meal replacement than a snack.

Now I need to start thinking about exercise. There’s a big trampoline in the back yard… Do I dare? Just kidding… Not yet anyway… Think I’ll just start by walking the dog. Whitney and I walked with our Border Collie Grace a very short distance the other day and I couldn’t believe how difficult it was and how it wore me out. I used to walk and jog through our neighborhood just a few years ago!

Want to join me on my green smoothie challenge? Whip out that blender and get some greens and fruit blending! If you’re new to green smoothies, start with lots of fruit and just a small handful of spinach. You won’t even taste the spinach, I promise. :)

Here are a few photos I quickly snapped with my ipad this morning, to show you the process…

Hard to believe all those greens are in there, isn't it? And it tastes like fruit!

UPDATE:  The green smoothie challenge went well!  Not perfect, but I am happy with the results… I am now more consistent making them, and not just for myself, but for Carl and Whitney as well. That’s a win!! :)

God’s Word

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. --Jeremiah 6:16
